Legendary Locals of Oak Cliff: Author Talk and Book Signing

Legendary Locals of Oak CliffDALLAS (SMU) –Guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, LPGA founder Babe Didrikson, actress Belito Moreno, musician T-Bone Walker and pastor Tony Evans are among those who once called the Dallas suburb, Oak Cliff, home.

Elliot, Patricia K. Summey and Gayla Brooks, authors of Legendary Locals of Oak Cliff (Arcadia Publishing, 2013) will speak at the talk sponsored by the Dallas Mayor's Summer Reading Club.

Elliot, an Oak Cliff native, is a faculty member in SMU's Department of Statistics and the author of more than 30 books, ranging from histories to children's books to technical books.

More About Alan Elliott

 is a native Texan with a knack for story. He is co-author of the movie Angels Love Donuts (with Leon McWhorter) filmed in Dallas and released on DVD. In addition to  Legendary Locals of Oak Cliff (released September 2, 2013 from Arcadia), he is the author of Willy, The Texas Longhorn, a children's picture book from Pelican.

Alan ElliottHe is also the author of Images of America: Oak Cliff (a pictorial history of the Oak Cliff section of Dallas), Currents in American History (a brief history of the United States based on significant incidents that shaped our history, with Terry Bilhartz), Texas Ingenuity: Lone Star Inventors, Inventions, and Innovators, and A Daily Dose of the American Dream, Stories of Success, Triumph and Inspiration (365 American success stories.)

Alan serves as the Executive Director of Baby Moses Dallas. Since 2004, Baby Moses Dallas has educated the public about the Texas Safe Haven "Baby Moses" Law that encourages mothers who might otherwise harm her baby to turn over the child to medical or rescue personnel. Through the group's efforts, State prescribed signs have been placed at nearly all Fire Stations and Hospitals in Dallas County and thousands of pieces of educational materials have been provided to hospitals, fire stations, schools, and community fairs. Since the inception of the program, the number of killed, "dumpster," and abandoned babies has been reduced dramatically.

Members of the 黑料老司机faculty, including Alan Elliott, are participating in the Dallas Mayor’s Summer Reading Club as part of the University’s joint efforts with the Dallas Public Library to encourage adult reading along with reading for children this summer.
